This is a joint venture conducted with the Pasadena Police Department and the Pasadena Fire Department. Approximately 50 local 9th through 12th graders participate in a five-day course of training designed to provide a hands-on experience in the areas of law enforcement, firefighting and emergency medical response.
The participants experience meaningful and positive interactions with Police Officers, Firefighters/Paramedics and with the community. They are introduced to such subjects as physical fitness, fire safety, CPR and team building exercises.
Hands-on Training
A field trip to the Rio Hondo Police Academy provides an opportunity to learn firsthand the life of a police recruit. Pasadena youth participate in physical fitness activities, and use of obstacle course, driving simulator and a shooting simulator with real-life scenarios and firearms safety.
Academy activities are conducted at the following facilities:
- Pasadena Police Department
- Pasadena Fire Department
- Rio Hondo Police Academy
- Museum of Tolerance
The activities are capped by a Graduation Luncheon where the participants are acknowledged. This is a perfect opportunity for Pasadena youth to learn about careers in Pasadena’s local community service organizations.
Candidates for the Junior Public Safety Academy can obtain information on scheduling and registration from Officer Vito Gaxiola or Officer Rodney Saunders at the Pasadena Police Department by calling at 626-744-4550, ext. 7651.
